When is Makar Sankranti in 2027?

Makar Sankranti falls on 14 January 2027. That date is calculated for New Delhi; because the tithi begins and ends at a local clock time, Ganak recomputes it for your own city.

How is Makar Sankranti observed?

Makar Sankranti is the major solar festival when Surya enters Makara in the sidereal Hindu calendar. The shared household observance is Surya arghya, til and jaggery or the family's seasonal food, charity and gratitude; fasting rules differ by family and region.

What is the significance of Makar Sankranti?

Religiously, this date marks Surya's transition from Dhanu to Makara and is traditionally associated with Uttarayana. Astronomically, the Sun's apparent northward turn now occurs at the December winter solstice, roughly three weeks earlier; precession has separated the two dates. The traditional observance continues to follow the Makara ingress.

What are the food and fasting rules for Makar Sankranti?

There is no single compulsory pan-Indian fast. The observance may include fast until Surya puja or take one simple meal; others celebrate without fasting. Til-gur, khichdi, dahi-chura, tilkut, Pongal and other foods belong to particular regions—follow your own family custom rather than treating every item as mandatory.

When is the parana — breaking the fast — for Makar Sankranti?

If your family keeps a Sankranti fast, complete it after the prescribed Surya worship, charity or family rite. There is no single pan-Indian paran clock; follow the family or temple rule that defined the fast.

How does Makar Sankranti vary by region?

North India: Surya arghya, sacred bathing, til-gur, charity and khichdi are prominent; Bihar also has dahi-chura and tilkut customs, while exact household menus vary. Maharashtra: families commonly exchange til-gul with wishes for sweet speech; haldi-kumkum belongs to communities that observe it. Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan: Uttarayan and kite flying are prominent. Use open spaces and bird-safe thread; sharp or metal-coated string can seriously injure people and animals.
